About Big Game Battle
"The
Big Game Battle" is an Invitational Fishing Tournament held
in August on the historic island of Nantucket. The tournament was
conceived by a group of weekend warriors looking for another excuse
to spend time on the water fishing and participating in the Island
festivities. The event was started in 2002 with three boats. This
year (2008) we have 25 boats already committed with room for
more.
Boats range in size from 26 feet to 82 feet in length with an average
crew of five. As you can see, we will be having over eighty people
committed to having a fun weekend. The Captains and Crews of the
boats have been known to talk a “Big
Game” on and off the water. Which is how our tournament got
its name. If you eavesdrop on the wharf or at the Gazebo you would
think this is a Class "A" tournament.
We are not there quite yet but stranger things have happened!
Bluefin
tuna were plentiful at the BC/BB buoy in 2002,’03, and ’04,
on the troll. Last year the east bite was at Crab Ledge and The Sword
where bait was plenitiful. Boats fish Hydrogarpher/Veatch
and Atlantis Canyons also every year. The decision to have the event
in the month of August was to have optimal conditions when the warm
water moves closer inshore and sea conditions are typically the best.
Upon arrival, there is a Captain’s meeting at Captain Toby’s to review
the rules and point system and review any questions/comments. At this meeting,
a tournament bag is given to each boat containing a variety of give aways and
tournament tee shirts. After the first day of fishing, there will be a raw bar
set up at one of the wharf cottages to talk up a Big Game. After the second day
of fishing, there will be an awards banquet with dinner and many prizes. At this
point, we will invite just about anybody to participate, so if you are interested
in the Big Game Battle on Nantucket, contact
us.
This is an un-registered tournament. Every Captain and Crew Member
fish at their own risk and is responsible to follow all Rules and
Regulations of the National Marine Fisheries.
